This summer was my first summer at Camp Rockmont. I had gone to Father Son weekend with my Dad and decided I wanted to go to camp for 2 weeks! It was the first time I would be away from my family for longer than 1 night. I was nervous and scared but also very excited. I knew it was going to be so much fun but I was very scared to be away from my family for that long. I’m also not a good sleeper and have trouble going to bed without a TV on or lights. My first day there I met all of my cabin mates and counselors. Everyone was friendly and made me feel at home. I was very homesick the first few days but was able to get through it with the help of my counselors and friends. Every day we went to our activities and got to try new things. My favorite part of camp was Evening Watch. I really liked getting together with my whole tribe, singing songs and watching slides.
I overcame a lot of obstacles at camp but the main one would be my sleeping issues. I didn’t think I would ever be able to fall asleep without a TV on or stay asleep without having nightmares. My counselor’s believed in me and helped me believe in myself. Without all the support I had at Rockmont I don’t think I would have been able to overcome that! Being at camp was an amazing experience I will never forget.
