Specialty Skills

Some skills can’t be learned just anywhere—but at Rockmont, campers have the unique opportunity to dive into hands-on trades and lifelong pursuits that set our experience apart. Whether forging metal in blacksmithing, crafting custom leather projects, mastering the art of fly fishing, or building strength and resilience in Fitness for Life, these specialty skills offer a one-of-a-kind challenge. Led by expert instructors, each activity blends tradition, craftsmanship, and personal growth, giving campers a deeper connection to their work and the satisfaction of learning something truly special.

Blacksmithing

(13+ Years)

Our forge is the perfect place for campers to learn the basic techniques of the time-honored craft of Blacksmithing. In this skill, campers will have the opportunity to hammer hot metal into hooks, rings, letter openers, and more.

Fitness for Life

(13+ Years)

Camp Rockmont’s workout room is open all summer long. In fitness for life, campers can complete sport-specific workouts or improve their overall athleticism and mobility with workouts targeting core strength, flexibility, cardio, and strength training. No need to worry about previous workout experience, each camper will be met where they are!

Fly Fishing

(11+ Years)

In this skill, campers will participate in the classic art of fly fishing. Our instructors will teach how to tie a variety of classic fly patterns and counsel when to use them. Each camper will be instructed on how to use a fly rod and will have the opportunity to use their handmade flies to catch fish on Rockmont’s fully stocked lake.

Leatherworking

The leatherworking skill will take campers back in time by walking them through the practices of a historically significant craft! Campers will develop techniques required to make personalized, traditional crafts such as knife sheaths, pouches, belts, water bottle carriers, and bags.

Bear Camp Bonanza

(For Bear Camp Campers)

Bear Camp Bonanza is a special program just for our youngest campers. Each day is packed with age-appropriate activities designed to keep them engaged and excited! With energy and imagination campers will enjoy activities like lego building, water gun wars, dam building, and gaga ball competitions! Bear Camp campers can sign up for Bear Camp Bonanza during our Skill Change period announced on the first full day of each session.

Sycamore Skill

(For Sycamore Tribe Campers)

Sycamore Skill is a unique program exclusively for our oldest campers, the Sycamore tribe. Led by our mountain camp tribal directors, the skill focuses on age-related topics and life skills to help campers prepare for what’s ahead. Sycamore skill is a time to kick back, relax, and hang out with friends in the quad while also having conversations about shaving, manners, navigating high school, and everybody’s favorite, how to grill. Sycamore Tribe campers can sign up for Sycamore Skill during our Skill Change period announced on the first full day of each session.
