A Rowdy and Restful Weekend at Rockmont!

Shawn Marler July 18, 2016

Weekends here at Camp are still full of excitement, but always a bit more relaxed than the rest of the week days. Saturday morning, with breakfast starting a little later than usual, campers arrived to Eden Hall and were surprised and thrilled to find sugary cereal on their tables. That was just one of the few treats that we got to enjoy during this restful weekend.

After a sweet breakfast on Saturday, camp proceeded on to a day full of Tribal Activities. Bear Camp arrived from their one-night Tribal and Cabin Campouts just in time for lunch and to compete in a very competitive Waterfront Olympics. Both Poplars and Sycamores participated in strategic games of Risk on the Golf Course at some point throughout their day. They spent the rest of their time playing table games and Three-Ball-Three-Disk, a combination of soccer and Ultimate Frisbee. The Hickories hiked down into the woods to experience camp’s Challenge Course which would grow them and enhance their abilities to work as a team.

At lunch, there was a big announcement made…Saturday night would be the Star Wars-themed Social with our sister camp, Camp Hollymont! The rest of the day was filled with excitement and preparation for this momentous event. Once the day’s Tribal Activities came to a close, most of the campers made sure to use their Free Swim time to shower and break out some clean clothes in order to impress our sister camp. They came to dinner to find Eden Hall decked out with Star Wars decorations of all kinds…including life-sized Star Wars character balloons, temporary tattoos, masks, streamers, and posters. Soon, Camp was abuzz with music coming from the gym, long lines for the snow cones and lemonade and cookies, Empire Strikes Back playing in Eden Hall, and campers sitting fireside.

Sunday morning came a little bit earlier for our ambitious mile-swimmers. They got to experience a feeling of great accomplishment along with a reward of a black swim band, donuts, and hot chocolate. After breakfast and an extended Cabin Cleanup, campers headed to their tribal areas for camper church – a time for songs, prayer, Scripture reading, and a morning message. Everyone met back on the lawn outside of Eden Hall after their time at church for a picnic lunch. Campers were excited to be able to eat lunch outside but were still a little upset when they didn’t see any dessert…until they realized that it was Sundae Sunday! After their extended rest period, they came back to where we ate lunch to find a buffet of ice cream and all the toppings they could have wanted. This sweet treat was enough to fuel Cabin Activities for Bear and Deer Camp and Waterfront Olympics for Mountain Camp. The rest of the night carried on with a delicious dinner and ended after all of camp returned from Council. We have had a great first week with all of your campers and are eager for all the excitement remaining!
