At Rockmont, we believe the best way to understand and appreciate the world is by engaging with it firsthand. Our Nature & Outdoor Skills programs invite campers to slow down, observe, and connect with the land. Whether exploring the forests and streams to uncover the wonders of the natural world or getting hands-on experience in homesteading—caring for animals, tending the garden, and learning sustainable practices—campers develop a deeper respect for nature and the skills to live in harmony with it.
Nature Skills
Homesteading
Rockmont embraces the rich history of Appalachian settler living and runs a modern-day sustainable farm. In homesteading, campers will get their hands dirty in the soil and help plant and harvest from our organic garden. They will get to feed chickens, shuck peas, pluck peppers, and even spend time with our resident animals! Of course, after all their hard work they will be rewarded with tasty treats from the garden.
Nature
Get acquainted with the ecology of Western North Carolina by jumping into the amazing world of plants, animals, streams, and forests. In the Nature skill, campers will meet and learn about some of the many organisms living in Rockmont’s backyard. From catching salamanders and frogs, to identifying plant species, there will be no shortage of exciting things to explore!
