Free Swim at Rockmont

Free Swim is a favorite time at Rockmont, giving campers the freedom to choose their own adventure with friends. Whether they prefer the adventure of the Rockmont Waterfront, riding the Gulley Washer, soaring down the Zip Line, playing disc golf, basketball, Thunder Ball, or simply relaxing on the porch of Eden Hall, there’s something for everyone. It’s a great opportunity for fun, connection, and making memories. During select Free Swim periods, the Camp Store is also open, with announcements made at the preceding meal.

Swimming Safety is a top priority at Rockmont, and we take a multi-layered approach to ensure all campers can enjoy our spectacular waterfront safely. It begins on Opening Day with a Swim Test, where each camper is assessed on their ability to swim 25 meters and tread water for 15 seconds. Based on the results, campers are provided with the appropriate level of support to maximize both safety and fun. During Free Swim, confident swimmers can explore the waterfront with a camper buddy, while those who need extra support are paired with a counselor buddy and equipped with a personal flotation device (PFD).

The safety of our waterfront is further enhanced by three layers of supervision: Lifeguards, Lookouts, and Buddies. All Rockmont Lifeguards are American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certified, and are further certified in the American Red Cross Waterfront Module. Our Lifeguards train and drill every week, working through various scenarios. Their professionalism and commitment is a model for the rest of camp.

Counselor Lookouts fill various positions around the Waterfront that don’t require a lifeguard. These positions include the Turtle (water trampoline), a lookout to assist our guard on the Cabana (Buddy Board), and a lookout to handout PFDs for campers looking to enjoy The Web.

Every participant on the Waterfront has a Buddy, who stay together while enjoying the waterfront. Buddy checks, facilitated by the waterfront staff, are called every 20 minutes.
