Dear Rockmont Staff – News on Summer 2020

Dear Rockmont Staff,

This week we made the difficult decision to cancel all of our summer sessions at Camp Rockmont. For the first time in our history, we will not be having camp. It brings real sadness, but also real belief that this is the wisest decision for the health and mission of our community.

You have all made incredible commitments to the Rockmont community for the 2020 Summer, hoping to affect the lives of campers and staff in profound ways. One of the reasons that we have made this decision now is to give you as much time as possible to make new plans for the summer. We appreciate your patience as we have worked to find a way to operate camp.

Rockmont is a source of fun, growth, adventure, and friendship and we know that it only feels more important because of how insular our lives have necessarily become in light of COVID-19. Although it is not how we envisioned things when we began the hiring process with you, we hope that this clarity will begin to give you some closure and help you move towards what is next.

Losing a summer of camp is a significant challenge for us, but we are committed to leading this camp into the future, and we are working to keep our team together. You are part of the team that we will want as we open again next year, so please keep us in your plans. We also want you to know what’s next here at Rockmont as we work towards Summer 2021:

Answers to a few questions you may have

If I want to work at Rockmont next Summer, will I have to go through the interview process again?

      1. You will not need to go through a full interview process again.
      2. When you reapply for summer 2021, we’ll contact you and check in to ensure you’d like the same position, it’s still a good fit, and we still have availability in that position.

When will the application open?

      1. The application will open in the Fall so stay tuned for more information.

Can I work in a different position than I had planned to for Summer 2020

      1. We’d love to consider you for any position that we have open and that you have gifts to bring in!

What if I'm in a position to lead next Summer but haven't been on the Summer Leadership Staff before?

      1. We admire the courage that it takes for staff to lead others every summer and if you’re interested in applying for Summer Leadership Staff we will take care to review your application and be in touch.

How can I stay connected to the Rockmont community?

      1. As we work towards next summer, we are thinking through fun ways for you to stay connected alongside social media, Rockmont Songfests, and Morning Watches.

We are in a new space in our individual lives and the collective life of the world. Communities, plans, and entire economies of the world have all been paused. Existing in this space is hard. It requires great waiting and trusting! Richard Rohr, an often read Christian teacher around Rockmont, calls this Liminal Space. He says,

“Liminal space is an inner state and sometimes an outer situation where we can begin to think and act in new ways. It is where we are betwixt and between, having left one room or stage of life but not yet entered the next. In such space, we are not certain or in control.”

Where there is a lack of certainty or control, there is profound truth that we are in the heart of God and loved absolutely. The mystery and unknown will lend to new journeys. These open us up to good and beautiful that are all around us.

As you move forward into graduations, new jobs, or new semesters, know that Rockmont is here for you. Though you will not be here this summer, your story will still be a new part of God’s collective story here at Rockmont. We hope that you stay in touch with us and, if you’re able, return to camp next summer bringing the gifts we’ve already seen in you, and we’ll see you soon!

With Courage,

The Rockmont Team
